One English 'for', two Spanish tools
English 'for' covers gifts, reasons, destinations, durations, and prices. Spanish divides that territory between para and por, and the division follows a logic you can learn.
The compass: para points at a target ahead, a destination, goal, recipient, or deadline. Por reaches into what stands behind or along the way, a cause, a route, an exchange, a means. Our Study Desk lesson introduces the core rule; this unit maps every major use and the fixed phrases.
Para: the target
- Recipient: Este regalo es para ti. (This gift is for you.)
- Destination: Salimos para Madrid mañana. (We leave for Madrid tomorrow.)
- Purpose, with infinitive: Estudio para aprobar. (I study in order to pass.)
- Deadline: La tarea es para el viernes. (The homework is due Friday.)
- Opinion: Para mí, este es el mejor café. (For me, this is the best coffee.)
- Employer: Trabajo para una empresa alemana. (I work for a German company.)
- Comparison against a norm: Para ser principiante, hablas muy bien. (For a beginner, you speak very well.)
| Necesito el informe para el lunes. | I need the report by Monday. para marks the deadline |
| Compré fruta para hacer un pastel. | I bought fruit to make a cake. para + infinitive expresses purpose |
Por: cause, route, exchange
- Cause or reason: Lo hice por amor. (I did it out of love.)
- Gratitude and apology: Gracias por tu ayuda. Perdón por el ruido.
- Movement through or along: Caminamos por el parque. (We walked through the park.)
- Exchange and price: Lo compré por veinte euros. (I bought it for twenty euros.)
- Means: Hablamos por teléfono. Te lo mando por correo. (By phone, by mail.)
- Part of the day: Trabajo por la mañana. (I work in the morning.)
- On behalf of, in place of: Hoy trabajo por mi colega. (I am covering for my colleague today.)
- Agent in the passive: La novela fue escrita por Cortázar. (The novel was written by Cortázar.)
| Paseamos por el centro por la tarde. | We strolled through downtown in the afternoon. route and part of day, both por |
| Cambié mi bici por una guitarra. | I traded my bike for a guitar. exchange takes por |
Minimal pairs that show the split
Same sentence, different preposition, different meaning. These pairs make the logic visible.
| Lo hice por ti. | I did it because of you. you were the cause |
| Lo hice para ti. | I made it for you. you are the recipient |
| Trabajo por mi hermano. | I am filling in for my brother. substitution |
| Trabajo para mi hermano. | I work for my brother. he is the employer |
Test with a question. If 'why?' fits the answer, reach for por. If 'what for?' or 'for whom?' fits, reach for para.
Fixed expressions: stop translating, start memorizing
A set of everyday phrases locks in one preposition permanently. Learn them as vocabulary.
| Expression | Meaning |
|---|---|
| por favor | please |
| por fin | finally |
| por supuesto | of course |
| por eso | that is why |
| por lo menos | at least |
| por ejemplo | for example |
| por si acaso | just in case |
| para siempre | forever |
| para nada | not at all |
| Por fin llegó el paquete; por eso estoy contento. | The package finally arrived; that is why I am happy. |
Duration: a note on por
You will hear por with durations, especially in Latin America: estudié por dos horas. Everyday Spanish also drops the preposition entirely: estudié dos horas, or uses durante. All three are fine; recognize por-duration when you hear it and do not force it into every sentence.
| Vivimos allí durante cinco años. | We lived there for five years. durante or no preposition are the most neutral options |
Pronunciation corner
Both words are unstressed in the sentence and lean on the following word. Keep them light and quick.
| por | [poɾ] | por with a single tongue tap on the r, like the tt in American 'butter' |
| para | [ˈpaɾa] | PAH-ra; both a sounds identical, r tapped once |
| por favor | [poɾ faˈβoɾ] | por fah-BOR; stress lands on BOR |
| por ejemplo | [poɾ eˈxemplo] | por eh-HEM-plo; the j is a raspy h from the back of the throat |

Frequently asked questions
Is there one rule that covers all uses of por and para?
The closest single frame: para points forward at a goal, recipient, destination, or deadline, while por points backward or sideways at a cause, route, exchange, or means. It will not decide every case alone, which is why the fixed expressions deserve pure memorization.
How do I say how long I did something?
Three natural options: no preposition (estudié dos horas), durante (estudié durante dos horas), or por, which is most common in Latin America (estudié por dos horas). If in doubt, drop the preposition; it is always correct.
Why is it 'gracias por' and never 'gracias para'?
Gratitude looks backward at the reason you are thankful, and reasons belong to por: gracias por venir, thanks for coming. The same logic covers apologies: perdón por llegar tarde.
Which is correct: trabajo por or trabajo para mi empresa?
Both exist with different meanings. Trabajo para X names your employer. Trabajo por X means you are substituting for someone: hoy trabajo por Ana, I am covering Ana's shift. For jobs, para is almost always the one you want.
