Imperfetto vs Passato Prossimo

  • Conjugate the imperfetto of regular verbs and essere
  • Choose between imperfetto and passato prossimo by function
  • Combine both tenses in one sentence with mentre and quando

Two pasts, two jobs

Italian splits the past by type of event. The passato prossimo reports what happened; the imperfetto paints how things were. Mastering the split is the heart of B1.

Think of a film. The passato prossimo is the action: someone knocked, she opened, they left. The imperfetto is the scenery and the routine: it was raining, the house was quiet, he always drank coffee at seven.

English hides this split inside 'was doing', 'used to do' and plain 'did', which is why translating tense by tense fails. Translate by function instead.

Building the imperfetto

Drop -re from the infinitive and add -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano. It is the most regular tense in the language.

Essere is the only truly irregular imperfetto. Fare, dire and bere build on their old stems: facevo, dicevo, bevevo. Everything else follows the chart.

When the imperfetto wins

  • Habits and repetition: Da bambino giocavo a calcio ogni domenica.
  • Descriptions of people, places and weather: Faceva freddo e pioveva.
  • Ongoing background states: Ero stanco. La casa era silenziosa.
  • Age and time in the past: Avevo dieci anni. Erano le otto.
Da bambino giocavo a calcio ogni domenica.
As a child I played soccer every Sunday.
Repeated habit: imperfetto.
Faceva freddo e pioveva.
It was cold and it was raining.
Avevo dieci anni nel 2010.
I was ten years old in 2010.
Past age is always imperfetto.
C'era molta gente in piazza.
There were a lot of people in the square.

When the passato prossimo wins

Completed, countable, dated events take the passato prossimo, even long ones. Ho abitato a Roma per tre anni: the period is closed, so the tense is passato prossimo. Duration alone never forces the imperfetto; what matters is whether the event is framed as finished.

Sudden events and changes also take the passato prossimo: improvvisamente ho sentito un rumore.

Ieri ho giocato a calcio con i colleghi.
Yesterday I played soccer with my colleagues.
One dated, completed event.
Ho abitato a Roma per tre anni.
I lived in Rome for three years.
A closed period: passato prossimo despite the duration.

Signal words help: ogni giorno, di solito, sempre, da bambino lean imperfetto. Ieri, improvvisamente, una volta, per tre anni (closed) lean passato prossimo. Treat them as strong hints, never as absolute laws.

The two tenses in one sentence

The classic pattern: imperfetto for the ongoing background, passato prossimo for the event that cuts into it. Mentre studiavo, 猫 arrivato Marco. While I was studying (background), Marco arrived (event).

Mentre almost always introduces an imperfetto. Quando can introduce either, depending on whether it frames a background or an event.

Mentre studiavo, 猫 arrivato Marco.
While I was studying, Marco arrived.
Background + interrupting event.
Abitavo a Roma quando ci siamo conosciuti.
I was living in Rome when we met.

Pronunciation corner

Imperfetto forms are long and rhythmic. Keep the stress off the endings and the v soft.

Frequently asked questions

What is the core difference between imperfetto and passato prossimo?

The passato prossimo reports completed events: what happened. The imperfetto describes states, habits and ongoing background: how things were. Ask whether the sentence narrates an event or paints a scene.

Does a long duration always mean imperfetto?

No. If the period is presented as closed, use the passato prossimo: Ho abitato a Roma per tre anni. The imperfetto version, Abitavo a Roma, frames the stay as open background for something else.

Which tense follows mentre?

Mentre introduces an ongoing action, so it takes the imperfetto: Mentre studiavo, 猫 arrivato Marco. The interrupting event stays in the passato prossimo.

Is the imperfetto hard to conjugate?

It is the most regular tense in Italian: -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano on the infinitive stem. Essere (ero, eri, era) is the only fully irregular verb; fare, dire and bere use the stems face-, dice- and beve-.
